Should we harness the Saharan sun?

At the European Renewable Energy Policy conference in Brussels this week, German Environment laid down a challenge to the renewables industry to harness the enormous potential for solar power in the North Africa.
If we can send a man to the moon, then why can’t we harness the sun’s energy in the Sahara? asked Gabriel.
There was subsequent discussion about the technical and political challenges that such a great project would involve, but not so much about the rationale.
The issue of developing world renewables came up many times over the course of the conference, with many speakers talking about the leadership role that Europe could play in developing the technologies that later go on to transform the energy economy in developing countries so that they are able to develop economically while using energy sustainably.
